NUTRITION FOR PETS They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and often it’s the same for man’s best friend. Good nutrition is paramount in providing your animals with good health and happiness. There are a lot of different theories on feeding animals, and many commercial diets make many claims.
Some commercial dog and cat foods are heat treated which can reduce the nutritional value. Certain vitamins are very sensitive to processing. For example nutrients such as thiamine (vitamin B1) which is essential for nerve function, can be depleted by heat treatment and sulphur dioxide, a common preservative. The essential vitamins and minerals in processed foods may not always be digestible. This means that the food may contain a nutrient, for example iron, but it may not be in a form that the body can absorb and utilize. Providing your dogs & cats with lean raw meats, vegetables, a little cereal grain, and meaty raw bones will give them a good basic diet.
As with dog and cat foods, there are many processed horse feeds, which are so processed that they provide little nutrition. In the wild horses will find the best pasture and areas where there are plants that offer what they need for a complete diet. A basic diet of roughage, grain and protein are important for inner health. Depending on your horses’ work load and health status, adding herbs and seeds will assist in stimulating and strengthening your horses own healing abilities. Horses' needs differ greatly depending on their stage of development, and the demands of the various disciplines. Please contact us to discuss your horses’ specific situation and needs. |
